Ford Mustang Rough Idle Caused By EGR Sensor Sticking

  3. Disconnect EGR sensor electrical connector and backprobe with multimeter on voltage and ground circuits. Check for 5V reference circuit and 0-5V signal circuit.
  4. Remove EGR valve and check for carbon deposits or debris impeding valve movement. Clean with throttle body cleaner removing all deposits.
  5. Disconnect vacuum lines to EGR valve and check for leaks allowing unmetered air into the intake.

Repair Solutions

If diagnostic steps above confirm a faulty, sticking EGR sensor, replacement is required. Replace sensor with an OEM Ford sensor from dealership parts department. Ensure electrical, vacuum connections are secure post replacement. After installation, clear EGR related trouble codes and perform EGR monitor drive cycle to allow the PCM to learn new sensor values. Confirm roughness and engine codes do not return which indicates successful repair.

If excessive carbon deposits in valve caused sticking, cleaning the valve passageways and installing a catch can or converter efficiency monitor can reduce future build up.
